About Yongkai Ow
Hello there! Welcome! I am guessing you landed on this page to find out a little more about me. I am delighted that you are curious, because that gives us something in common! You could say curiosity is one of my greatest motivators. Good thing my parents named me Kai, rather than Kat!
Now, let’s see what can I share with you about me. I came into life coaching with horses through a convoluted route. Having always wanted to be on the cutting edge and be a pioneer rather than a follower, I took the road less travelled, and delved into a career of life coaching in partnership with horses to help people.
Because I am a person who commits whole-heartedly once my path was clear, I researched into the world of Equine Facilitated Learning, and found the programs that best suited my pursuit for excellence.
I am trained as a certified practitioner in the Equine Gestalt Coaching Method, as well as a recommended Instructor in the Eponaquest program.
“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.” – Marie Curie
Because I am the only person on Earth that has trained in these two elite programs, I can offer my clients a unique amalgamation of their approaches, and the best tools that are available. Since I am constantly on a journey of self-discovery, I will continue expanding my toolbox and share what works efficaciously with my clients.
I was following a scientific research career in academia, which included a conventional and excellent education, which includes:
- BS with Honors from California Institute of Technology in Chemical Engineering and Biology
- AM from Harvard in Chemistry
- PhD from University of California Berkeley in Molecular and Cell Biology with an emphasis in Immunology.
- Post-doctoral training with Dr. Tak Mak at Campbell Institute of Breast Cancer Research at the University of Toronto.
As you can see I have had eclectic taste in science, allowing myself to pursue my curiosity and interests where it took me.
As I was in the midst of my post-doctoral training, several life transitions turned me onto my new path, life coaching with horses. I had realized during that journey through heartbreak, and grief, darkness and burnout, I realized I was disconnected from life. I needed a more holistic approach to wellbeing— which having been educated out of me during my immersion in the scientific culture — and I turned to my Eastern roots, having grown up in Singapore and enjoying an upbringing that blended Western education with Eastern culture. I delved into energy healing and the mind-body connection, but it was horses and reconnecting with Nature that brought me back to my path.
They helped me to emerge on the other side, transformed and becoming more self-aware of my values, my passions and my purpose. I still loved science, and wanted to make a difference there, but I knew in my heart that while I was very good at scientific research, it was not the right environment for me.
What you do makes a difference and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make – Jane Goodall
I realized that I could contribute more, given my unique talents and temperament, by moving from being a biochemist to an alchemist, and becoming a catalyst for positive change.
As a nature and animal lover, it was apparent that I was to do this in partnership with horses and other animals. It is my path to help my clients learn their own wisdom and the wisdom of all creatures great and small.
According to Martha Beck, a life coach is “the behavioral equivalent of a personal trainer. A therapist, like a physician, works with unwell people to restore them to health. (A life coach works) with healthy people to help them achieve maximum “fitness” – that is, wellbeing and quality of life.
With the help of horses, we can go one step further than that: We can help you release the trauma and pain you have been carrying so you can let it go.
Horses are my partners in this work and my collaborators as coaches. Whether it is basic life skills like improving your assertiveness or setting good boundaries, or tapping into the wisdom these sentient beings hold for us, you won’t forget the lessons these magnificent and powerful creatures have for you.
Let horses and I help you find your own wisdom..
We cannot teach people anything; we can only help them discover it within themselves.” Galileo Galilei
The Equine Gestalt Coaching Method®
The Equine Gestalt Coaching Method® was developed by Melisa Pearce, a core founder since 1989, of the horse-human healing movement. The experiential nature of the method involves the horse as an active partner with the coach in the client’s exploratory process. The integrative approach of the equine’s interaction combined with positive coaching, somatic awareness guidance and Gestalt methodology, assists the client in examining their life and choices made with a focus on designing a positive future.
Eponaquest was developed by Linda Kohanov, best selling author, lecturer and horse trainer in 1997. This program concentrates on partnering with horses to teach clients leadership, personal empowerment, somatic awareness, and emotional fitness skills.”
The Eponaquest approach helps clients to experience being empowered with the skills and tools that allow them to thrive in life, including creativity, reconnection with nature and deeper insight.
